De Brasil paradisíaca Pantano de Pantanal
The Pantanal in Brazil, which receives an average yearly rainfall of 39 to 55 inches, is not only a tropical wetland where one can also find rainforests, lagoons, and waterfalls but something of a catchall when it comes to collecting the area’s waters. It is a gently sloping basin that collects runoff from upland areas and is where numerous rivers flow and merge from surrounding plateaus, which is why it is frequently referred to as the world’s largest freshwater wetland system, as well as one of Earth’s great natural wonders, one which has no rival when it comes to its collection of aquatic plants, vast amount of animal and bird species, and just its vastness. Just a couple of the animals one might encounter at the Pantanal include the giant river otter and the elusive, endangered jaguar (tracking tours are available). In this diverse ecosystem one can also find more than 3,500 species of plants, 100 mammals, 80 species of reptile, and more than 650 types of birds, making the Pantanal a bird-watcher’s paradise.
For those wishing to visit the Pantanal in Brazil, there exists a 520-square-mile park, the Pantanal Matogrossense National Park which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the municipality of Poconé as well as the nearby 339-square-mile, privately owned Pantanal Private Natural Heritage Reserve. A great way to cover ground in the park is to go on safari, whether by Jeep, horseback, or your own two feet, and fortunately there are numerous tourist organizations that provide Pantanal safaris. If organized tours are not your thing and you prefer to strike out on your own, a perfect place to observe the wildlife is from the Transpantaneira Highway between the months of May and September (the remaining months of the year are the rainy season which can leave up to 80 percent of the Pantanal under water). Another popular mode of transport through the Pantanal is by boat or canoe on the Paraguay River, particularly during the rainy season (October through April) because high waters caused by flooding bring to life not only the river but lakes, lagoons, and waterfalls, as well as the overall experience of the visitor to this watery wonderland.
